Bringing a car to school drove my savings into the ground

What I found with having a car at school is that expenses will follow wherever you go. Beyond the basic cost of gas and an occasional wash, you can't bring your car into the city without paying for parking somewhere.

And then there's stuff that your checking account can't absorb. A recent fender-bender brought my auto insurance premiums and had to be repaired at a local body shop. Just as I had saved up money for concert tickets, I got hit with a fine from the red light camera around the corner from our place.

The worst was this past month when my engine blew, forcing me to dig into my savings up to $5,000. I suggest taking note of your transportation alternatives before bringing a car to school.
